The
State of the Wye
We are seriously
worried at the state of the Wye - pollution, silting, destruction of its
banks are among the issues that trouble us:

Here we see the river being
sampled from Bredwardine Bridge after heavy rainfall in early June 2009.
The silt in the bucket is allowed to settle, and then the number of
tonnes of lost top soil per day surging past the bridge can
be estimated
When the river is
full (although not so muddy) and flowing fast, there is danger to the
bridge from fallen trees carried down on the current:

There is serious
danger, too, from bankside incursions. See David Lovelace's recent
paper
on this subject.

Here are two pages giving a list of operations liable to damage the features of
Special Scientific Interest of the River Wye: page 1,
page 2. See also these

The
Severn Barrage
At
a recent committee meeting our attention was drawn to the findings of a
recent enquiry, jointly sponsored by the RSPB
and the Wye & Usk
Foundation, into the plans for
the proposed Severn
Barrage. We were warned of the serious danger to wildlife,
particularly to fish and birds, posed by this project.
More information can be found on the RSPB's
website.
